Eleanor and Park

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell is a novel about two sixteen year olds who took a chance on love. The main characters in the novel are big redhead Eleanor and a Asian Park, who lives two completely different lifestyles.

Being a future educator I would not recommend this book to anyone in middle or elementary school due to the high profanity. I do believe a high school student would love this book because of the plot, and numerous things a reader could relate to. Many reader may be able to relate to being a bully or being bullied, feeling awkward around their crush, or maybe even experiencing some of the similar problems the characters faced. I found myself relating to many things throughout the book. Such as memorizing my first crush phone number, and worrying about rather or not my friends would approve of him. I remember being on my cell phone having late night talks, trying not to get caught by my mom.

My first impressions of Eleanor and Park was the storyline was very interesting, drawing me in to read more and more. Last thing I knew I was lost in the book, and it was 1 AM way past my bed, since I usually am asleep by 11 PM. I did find it shocking how boom in chapter one on page five the F bomb was already dropped. I loved how Eleanor managed to go to a new school, and didn't feel the need to impress anyone or go out of her way to try and fit in with the cool kids. Eleanor seemed to be accepting of who she was and just embraced it, which is why I think Park eventually found her more, and more attractive.

As of now I'm only on page 114, but I'm sure one you get started on this book you will find it hard to set it back down. Can't wait to finish the book, and write more of my thoughts and impression!

  1. I agree with you, I did not expect some of the profanity, but I think it makes it seem more relatable at times. I like how you talked about how relatable this book can be for high school aged kids. The author does a great job describing all of the emotions that kids often experience during that time of their life.

  3. I found this book to really be a good YA book because of the relatability, a lot of what you talked about. It hit on many themes that I think young adults can really relate to- without it being overly preachy. I liked the story and stayed up reading it later than I expected I would as well

  4. I really think this book has a good premise also. I think it was a little shocking too, to see some of the language used in the book and anyone reading this book I think can relate to it.
